Virginia Licensing Exam Information

Once you have completed your 60-hour Virginia Principles class, you are eligible to sit for your real estate licensing exam for the State of Virginia.

PSI Examination Services is the testing company currently contracted by the Real Estate Board in Virginia to administer the licensing examination.  In Hampton Roads the test is given by appointment at the Pembroke IV building in Virginia Beach. The test is administered by computer and consists of two sections:

  • The National portion tests knowledge areas which are required for real estate professionals in every state.
  • The Virginia State portion tests knowledge areas for the Virginia real estate professional.

If you fail one of the two, you only need to retake that portion. You may take the exam as many times as necessary as long as you are willing to pay the required fee each time. Once completed, the results are given immediately.  For more information, visit the PSI website.

The PSI Candidate Bulletin is another useful source of information.

Finger printing for all Virginia real estate license applicants is mandatory.

I passed the exam! Now what do I do?
Once you have passed the licensing examination, you have up to 12 months in order to apply for your license.  In order to activate your license, you must choose a Broker who will sponsor your activation.  If you choose not to activate, you may apply to the Real Estate Board for an inactive license.  If you do not do either of the above within the 12 month period, you will have to re-take the exam.
